The Plastic Oasis
Masters Thesis
The Plastic Oasis is a research driven project that analyses the power of the visual landscape on the suburban environment and its inhabitants. Fantastic places that bridge the gap between fact and fiction – such as theme parks and shopping malls – function as an interesting starting point in this work that uses graphic design, sculpture and architecture to manifest itself. This project is the result of literature-based research of authors such as Venturi, Zukin, Avila, Koolhaas and Baudrillard. Their theories are applied in a contemporary context and reinterpreted in a visual way. This project was exhibited as a master’s thesis at St. Lucas Antwerp and consisted of a publication, a large maquette, a lightbox and three smaller 3D-printed maquettes.
